A Romantic Weekend in Bruges (When You Finally Get a Weekend Off)

Sometimes the grandparents take the kids and you get a whole weekend back. Bruges is made for exactly that — compact, walkable, and unfairly pretty.

Stay inside the ring

Book a small canal-side hotel inside the old town so everything is on foot and the day-trippers leave by evening, handing the cobbled streets back to you.

Day 1: Wander, then climb

Get lost on purpose in the morning. Climb the Belfry before lunch (the queue only grows). Spend the afternoon on a slow canal boat, then a long dinner with moules-frites and a Belgian dubbel.

Day 2: Chocolate & day-trip

Do a proper chocolate tasting — skip the souvenir shops and find a maker. If you’ve got the energy, Ghent is 25 minutes by train and feels like Bruges with fewer crowds.

Why it works for friends too

Swap the romantic dinner for a beer-hall crawl and the same itinerary turns into a brilliant friends weekend. Bruges scales nicely either way.
