Flying Long-Haul with a Toddler: What Actually Works
We’ve now done four long-haul flights with a toddler. The first was chaos. The fourth was almost pleasant. Here’s everything we learned the hard way.
Book the right seats
If your toddler is under 2 and flying as a lap infant, request a bulkhead row with a bassinet at booking — they go fast. Once they’re over 2 and need their own seat, aim for a window so they’re not climbing over strangers.
The snack rule
Pack twice as many snacks as you think you need, in small separate containers. Doling out one new thing every 30–40 minutes buys you more peace than any toy.
Screen timing
Save screens for the back half of the flight. If you open the iPad at takeoff, you’ve got nothing left for hour eight. Download shows before you leave home — airplane wifi will let you down.
Gear that earns its place
- A footrest hammock so they can lie flatter and actually sleep.
- A lightweight carrier for the airport — far easier than a stroller through security.
- A change of clothes for you, not just them. Trust us.
The mindset
Lower your own expectations. You will not read. You will not watch the movie. Your only job is to get a small human across the planet. Reframe it as a win the moment you land.
