Lisbon is one of the most kid-friendly capitals in Europe — if you plan around the hills. Here’s the exact 3-day route we walked (and tram-ed) with a 3- and 6-year-old, with plenty of gelato built in.
Where to stay with kids
Base yourself in Príncipe Real or Chiado — central, flatter than Alfama, and walkable to most things. We booked a two-bedroom apartment so the kids had their own room and we got an evening back.

- Pastéis de Belém first thing, before the queues.
- The riverfront promenade is fully stroller-friendly and flat — rare in Lisbon.
- Skip the Belém Tower interior with little ones (narrow stairs); the outside is the photo anyway.
Day 2: Trams, the castle & a playground reward
Take the famous Tram 28, but board early at the start of the line to get a seat. Promise the kids a playground at the top — São Jorge Castle has peacocks and big open space to run.
Day 3: Oceanário de Lisboa
The Oceanário is genuinely one of the best aquariums in Europe and an easy half-day even in bad weather. Book a skip-the-line slot for the morning.

- Rent the apartment with a washing machine — three days in and you’ll thank us.
- Buy the reusable Viva Viagem transit card per person; kids under 4 ride free.
- Afternoons get hot — plan indoor or shaded stuff after 1pm.
